Samsung’s been on a roll lately, announcing numerous handsets and device updates: it’s added two additional devices to its lineup (AT&T’s Samsung Focus 2 and Europe’s Samsung Omnia M), and the Galaxy Note has started to receive the Android 4.0 update, as well. And is Windows Phone really better than the competition? Microsoft says yes, and in a rather humorous turn of events, Apple’s own Siri seems to agree.

HP CEO Meg Whitman has announced that her company is in the tablet business again, although this time they will run Microsoft’s Windows 8 instead of HP’s previously defunct and now open source webOS. Toshiba, on the other hand, continues to sell Android-based tablets, including the recently-released Toshiba Excite 10, which retails for $450-650. And could WiFi-only tablets be on the way out? AT&T’s Glenn Lurie seems to think so.

Samsung’s 4.8-inch Galaxy S III has finally been revealed, featuring a 1.4GHz processor, up to 64GB of internal memory, NFC, and a Siri clone called S Voice. RIM also made headlines by giving developers free BlackBerry 10 handsets. Meanwhile, Windows Phone developers will most likely get a glimpse at this fall’s major update, codenamed Apollo, during the Developer Summit that is scheduled for June 20-21 in San Francisco.

Barnes & Noble has announced that it is ending its long patent dispute with Microsoft by spinning off its NOOK business into a new company tentatively (and unimaginatively) known as “Newco.” Surprisingly, Microsoft has invested $300 million into Newco for a 17.6% stake. Big changes are also afoot at Windows Live, which is undergoing a brand change in conjunction with Windows 8. Finally, Amazon has updated the Kindle Fire with a suite of parental controls.

Microsoft plans to make the Windows 8 Release Preview available for download during the first week of June. This build will represent a near-final version of the software giant’s next OS, which will be available in the fall. Not to be outdone, Google Drive also finally came out, giving us some excellent choices.

Samsung is preparing to announce the Galaxy S III, and HTC has revealed that the One X will arrive at AT&T on May 6 for $200. Meanwhile, the much cheaper Lumia 900 is selling as fast as Nokia can make them, and this seems to have caught the attention of Verizon, which suddenly wants to repeat its Android success with Windows Phone. Finally, Microsoft Research’s FALCON can accurately predict which app you’ll use next.

The Cowon Plenue Z2 might arrive in the US in early May, according to a company spokesperson. The device, which is Cowon’s second media player running Android, has been available in Korea for some time. It will be released in two variants: a white 16GB model for $280 and a black 32GB model for $320. This is a bit pricier than we’d like, but it does include a few nice improvements over your average PMP.

Good and EVO

With news that the EVO 3D has disappeared from Sprint’s site and that the EVO Design 4G might head to Boost Mobile, Sprint looks like it’s trying to make room for upcoming LTE devices like the EVO 4G LTE, which actually might arrive sooner than we thought. Nothing But Tablets

Do you want a handy app that allows you to access widgets and icons from anywhere within the Android OS? Then you may want to take a look at Wave Launcher for Android! Meanwhile, PeekTab is raising a few eyebrows by claiming to be the world’s first spyware for tablets. Also, since haptic feedback is so common on smartphones and tablets everywhere, why is it missing on the iPad? Finally, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is rumored to be getting a new processor, and production has been stopped for now.

Pocketables

Android’s biggest strength is arguably the customization that can be done at almost every level of the OS. But there are also some great old school games available, like Mario or Sonic, which are still incredibly fun to this day, but don’t work very well on a touchscreen. Enter the Phonejoy, an external  game controller for your Android device, which we reviewed extensively on Pocketables. Zune Boards

Sadly, ChevronWP7 has passed away. The service let advanced Windows Phone users sideload their own certified apps and other homebrew apps, and it had been managed and approved by Microsoft. At least Nokia Lumia users seem to have an alternative with Inroads, which also lets users sideload apps and gives them much more access to OS than users currently have.

Nokia just released the long-awaited Lumia 900 to much fanfare, topping Amazon’s sales charts and exceeding AT&T’s expectations. However, some customers were hit by an annoying data bug, although the Finnish manufacturer responded by giving everyone a $100 rebate and rapidly deploying an update. So if Nokia’s excellent customer service has you impressed, be sure to take a look at our unboxing video, and then go Behind the Tiles.

Anythingbutipod

Rockbox has released another firmware update for portable media players, and improvements include USB support for the Sansa Clip+, Clip v2, and Fuze v2; improved stability; a few interface improvements to allow for more customization; and support for downmixing of multichannel FLAC files to stereo. This update comes just four months after the group’s previous release, which also happened to coincide with its tenth anniversary.

Good and EVO

As EVO fans across the US wait for EVO 4G LTE preorders to begin on May 7, be sure to read our take on why the integrated, non-removable battery is not the end of the world. Indeed, with HD voice, a kickstand, unlimited LTE for the same price as before, and much more, the newest EVO is sure to be a hit. Toshiba just announced the new Excite series of tablets, which includes a model with a 13.3-inch screen. ZTE announced a while ago that it wants to take the US by storm, and one device it hopes will accomplish this goal is the Optik, a Sprint tablet that’s just $99 on-contract. But is it right for you? StreakSmart

It seems that Dell doesn’t really care much about its Streak line of phones and tablets in the US anymore, but that doesn’t mean the Round Rock-based computer company has entirely abandoned the Streak’s software development. In fact, Dell recently posted revisions to the Streak 5′s kernel, bringing it up to versions 4.05 and 4.07. However, while the release isn’t official quite yet, we’d guess that it will be soon.

Zune Boards

While most Windows Phone 7 power users really enjoyed the ChevronWP7 service, it has now gone the way of the dinosaurs and is closed for good. Speaking of dinosaurs, be sure to take part in our discussion about whether or not you still use your Zune, or even when it last saw the light of day. AT&T will have its biggest-ever device launch on April 8 for the $99 Nokia Lumia 900, which is up for pre-order now. The HTC Titan II will be released on the same day for $199. If you’d rather get a free phone, Microsoft is giving them away until April 5, provided you don’t mind a bit of controversy. Also, changes are afoot at RIM, the Sprint/WiMAX deal is no more, and are smartphones the future of finance?

Here at Anythingbutipod, we’re passionate about portable media players. But as smartphones have increased in popularity, thanks to their all-in-one nature, the market for PMPs has leveled off somewhat. That doesn’t mean they aren’t relevant, however. When it comes down to storage capacity and battery life, most smartphones still can’t match a PMP. We continue to use our media-dedicated devices on a regular basis, but we’d love to hear about your usage patterns.

StreakSmart

In a move that was inevitable, Dell has killed off its smartphone operations in the US—for now. The company’s Venue and Venue Pro devices have run their course, said a Dell spokesman, leading to a discontinuation. This, however, isn’t the last we’ll see of Dell-branded smartphones. Dell believes that its mobile products are just as important as its information technology (IT) ones. That’s pretty big, given that Dell is rebranding itself as an IT company.

AT&T has announced that ten more devices—including the Samsung GALAXY Note–will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the timeframe is currently unknown. The HTC Vivid, on the other hand, already has an ICS update ready for download. On the gaming side, Angry Birds Space is now available and the promise of cross-platform save games will soon become a reality. Finally, Windows Phone has been launched in China and Brazil.

Good and EVO

Those of you still sporting an EVO 4G should check out Good and EVO’s latest Sense 1.0 mods. If you prefer vanilla Android, a new release of CyanogenMod is now available for download via both a torrent and traditional methods. But if you’re most interested in the latest and greatest (and as-of-yet unannounced) EVO, you probably won’t have to wait much longer. In the meantime, why not try your hand at Angry Birds Space?

Nothing But Tablets

If you watch your tablet’s battery like a hawk, make sure that ad-supported apps are not draining your charge. NBT also took a look at how some mobile games are becoming increasingly expensive and whether it is worth buying the pricier titles. We also released a second review of one of our favorite apps, Splashtop, which has continued to improve over the last year. Finally, a new app lets you record videos of your iPad.

Pocketables

Android phones are great, but they typically don’t have as many accessories as the iPhone. Fortunately, Android does have one thing that iOS doesn’t: developers who can dig deeper into system settings. Headset Droid lets you use those “iPhone-specific” headphone controls any way you’d like. And if you prefer to listen to music while surfing two webpages at once, try the SPBrowser web browser for your Sony Tablet P, which features unique split-screen functionality.

StreakSmart

The Dell Streak 7 has been discontinued for a while now, but there are still a few devices floating around the market just waiting to be sold. Fry’s Electronics is selling an unlocked Dell Streak 7 with T-Mobile 4G bands for just $249. Unfortunately, the sale only applies in-store, and some readers have reported that their local Fry’s is out of stock, despite a limit of one device per customer.

The Sony Xperia sola will feature floating touch technology, and an upcoming game will allow players to save their progress on Xbox 360 and pick up where they left off on Windows Phone. 4G is all the rage, with AT&T adding twelve new markets, Verizon adding seven, and T-Mobile adding eight. Plus, Cricket and Clearwire have inked a 4G deal, Everything Everywhere’s LTE network has been green-lit, and NTT DOCOMO has passed 60 million subscribers.

Anythingbutipod has a very special review of the V-Moda M80 headphones, courtesy of forum member Jörgemeister. This piece looks at the stylized closed-back headphones in-depth, and the result is somewhat surprising. V-Moda’s latest pair of headphones actually sounds quite good, despite the Hollywood-based company’s reputation for style over substance. But if even that won’t help, and you bought your Streak 5 from Best Buy with the store’s insurance, you might be able to switch it out for a Samsung Galaxy Note.

Anythingbutiphone

In a surprising move, Google quietly rebranded the Android Market as Google Play. The search giant hopes this will become the go-to destination for apps and entertainment of all sorts, from streaming music and video to books. Meanwhile, the Windows Marketplace for Mobile 6.x—not to be confused with the Windows Phone Marketplace—will finally be shut down in May. Anythingbutipod

Portable media player manufacturer iriver is back with the E40 and B100. The former isn’t all that impressive, with a relatively small touch screen and a limited number of supported video formats, but it has an outstanding 51 hours of battery life. The B100, on the other hand, is much more interesting. It features an unusual 3:2 aspect ratio, an interesting UI and chassis design, the usual audio and video codecs, and ebook support.

Nothing But Tablets

The iPad 3 is finally official, sporting a higher resolution screen, but its 70% battery increase is offset by greater power requirements. Furthermore, is failing to include Siri a smart move on Apple’s part? Nothing But Tablets also released a troubleshooting video for those having issues with the USB/BT Joystick Center. Finally, Android users might want to check out TexTab, an app that allows you to send an SMS from your phone via your tablet.

Pocketables

The Motorola DROID 4 is, as one might expect, the fourth iteration of Motorola’s popular line of Android smartphones. This device brings a fresh take to the classic DROID style, which has remained fairly similar throughout the years. StreakSmart

StreakSmart is basically all about the developer community these days. In fact, the Streak line itself has, for the most part, become focused exclusively on developers. One such developer recently released CyanogenMod7 and MIUI for the Streak 5, and we have a guide to help you learn how to flash the ROMs. If flashing a device isn’t your thing, consider the Streak Pro 101DL or GS01, which come with Baidu’s Android-based Yi operating system.

Anythingbutiphone

Mobile World Congress contained tons of announcements from such manufacturers as Sony, Panasonic, ZTE, and Huawei. The most noteworthy news is HTC’s new One series and Sense 4.0, the Samsung GALAXY Beam, the ASUS Padfone, and the Nokia 808 PureView with a massive 41MP camera. Nokia and ZTE also revealed devices which take advantage of Windows Phone’s newly-lowered system requirements. Finally, AT&T has confirmed data throttling for unlimited customers.

Anythingbutipod

Samsung recently announced the GALAXY S WiFi 4.2, which is really just minor update to the manufacturer’s 4 and 5-inch models. This latest GALAXY Player features an updated screen size and color scheme. The rest of the specs remain mostly the same: a 1GHz processor, 8 or 16GB of internal memory, a microSD slot, and a 1500mAh battery. Those who liked the previous Android 2.3-based PMPs should enjoy this refresh, but it doesn’t fix any of its predecessors’ flaws.

If Dell is going to phase out its lower-end computers and tablets and focus more on high-end devices, what does the future of the Streak line look like?

Zune Boards

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been released and, although it’s only a teaser of what’s to come, it definitely shows the direction that Microsoft is headed. This includes the fact that Zune is now gone for good in Windows. In addition, Microsoft released a beta (version 0.2.0) of Skype for Windows Phone. And while it’s only a beta right now, it’s still the first step forward after Microsoft bought Skype over a year ago.
